WORLD LEPROSY DAY 2024

On January 31st, 2024, Navodaya College of Nursing commemorated World Leprosy Day by organizing rehabilitation activities for leprosy survivors residing in a colony. Led by first-semester B.Sc. Nursing students, the event aimed to provide support, raise awareness, and reduce stigma associated with leprosy.

The activities included a range of initiatives. Health education sessions were conducted to empower the survivors with knowledge about leprosy and its management. Game activities were arranged to foster social interaction and promote physical well-being among the survivors. Additionally, essential items such as food, dressing kits, and footwear were donated to meet the basic needs of the survivors.

Prior to the activities, the students took an oath in solidarity with World Leprosy Day. The oath affirmed their commitment to providing compassionate care, advocating for the rights of leprosy survivors, and working towards eradicating the stigma associated with the disease.

Mrs. Rakhi Sarkar, Professor in Community Health Nursing, delivered an informative session on “Beat Leprosy” and emphasized the importance of ending discrimination against individuals affected by the disease. Her talk aimed to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding leprosy, while advocating for inclusive treatment and support for affected individuals.

The event was organized with support from Mrs. Jyoti,Associate professor in Nursing, and overseen by Prof.Hetzy Suthanakumari, the college’s Principal. Their guidance and leadership were crucial in ensuring the success of the program. Special thanks were extended to District Health office, Raichur, Sr. Deena from the Assisi Franciscon congregation, Raichur, and Mr. Devappa and Mrs. Jothi from the leprosy colony in Raichur for their invaluable assistance and collaboration.

Overall, the initiative showcased Navodaya College of Nursing’s commitment to community health and social responsibility. By providing practical assistance, raising awareness, and promoting inclusivity, the event contributed to the holistic well-being of leprosy survivors and fostered a more compassionate and understanding society.
